Helping young Africans in making a positive impact on society

The African Youth Initiative (AYI) is a not-for-profit organisation formed in response to the disengagement of African Youth within their communities and our personal experiences as African youth growing up in the western suburbs of Melbourne. Through role-modelling and a range of programs, we aim to reconnect African youth to their communities and empower them to be positive contributors to society.

What do we do at AYI?

We do everything from facilitation all the way to event planning and coordination. Some of our partners include organisations such as the Western Bulldogs Community Foundation and Melton City Council. Send us an enquiry now to get further information!

Schools Program

Disengagement from school and unclear career pathways can lead to disengagement from the community and engaging in anti-social behaviour. A.Y.I will be providing at-school mentorship programs covering topics aimed to assist young African students with making decisions conducive to future career choices and keeping them engaged at a school environment.

Weekly Mentorship Program

Young Africans need positive guidance and role models that they can consistently interact with in a safe environment. A.Y.I will be running a weekly mentorship program in a Melton location that will be free for highschool students to attend. The program will involve workshops and activities aimed in helping students explore career choices and providing positive role modeling that will help students make the right decisions in their youth from role models that have been in their shoes before.

United Families Forum

The African Youth Initiative is working towards hosting a forum in Melton in 2022 to help reconnect African parents to their Australian-raised children. Discussions on culture clashes, the responsibilities of parents and children, and issues parents and their children face respectively will take place.

“In today’s generation and culture, we have too many youths not evaluating the potential outcomes of their actions until it is too late, and A.Y.I wants to go counter-culture and help kids go against the grain for their own long-term benefit.”

— Aken Angok, C.E.O of African Youth Initiative
